Hurricane Opal was a threatening category 4 storm in the Gulf of Mexico the morning of October 4, 1995 as seen in this view.

This image was derived from the visible, near and thermal IR bands from the AVHRR aboard the NOAA-12 satellite. It was created by draping an RGB image over a digital elevation model (DEM) generated from cloud top temperatures. The DEM was derived from an inverted channel 4 band (thermal IR) while the RGB image was created using channel 4, channel 2 (near IR) , and channel 1 (visible). The perspective view represents an elevation of 80° from horizontal. The date of this scene is October 4, 1995 at 12:25 UTC.
