TROPICAL STORM ANNIE, 28 October-3 November At about the middle of October, the ITCZ crossed the equator during its annual movement north to south. On the 26-27th, it was affected by a tropical depression which developed in the Gulf of Bengal. A formation began within the ITCZ and a tropical system, classified at stage C was formed. This system was located near 5.0 degrees South and 65.0 degrees East. It caused stormy weather at Diego-Garcia, even at the early stage, which was located about 800 km east-south-east of the system. Annie moved quickly south-east and intensified. It reached stage C+ on the 29th. This was confirmed by the winds from the north-west which reached 25 knots, and the minimum pressure which registered at 1006.4 mb at Diego-Garcia. The circular motion began and the size of the associated cloud system grew. The depression was classified at stage X2 on October 30th. With a central zone of 5 degrees, this depression would have normally had winds reaching 60-65 knots. However, these values were not confirmed due to the lack of the meteorological stations near the center. Annie did not develop any further and after having moved south-west (X2), it underwent the influence of an anticyclone which arrived from the west, and which was an obstacle in the depression's movement south. After November 1st, this depression moved regularly west- north-west, continually weakening. By November 5th, it dissipated at a distance of 500 km north-east of Diego-Saurez. Infleunce on the Reunion: Not significant...only sea swells along the north and east coast on November 1st and 2nd.
