The files are in the portable document format (PDF), and are accessed using Adobe's Acrobat Reader version 2.1 supplemented with a search engine. If windows is already running, quit all applications. (UNIX instructions are in the file \unixinst\sun_hp\instguid.txt) (Macintosh users may download reader from Adobe web site at URL http://www.adobe.com/acrobat/readstep.html) - Insert the JEL CD-ROM into CD-ROM drive. - From the Windows Program Manager, choose RUN from the FILE menu. - From the RUN dialog box, select BROWSE, then select the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive. From the directory listed for the CD-ROM, select the ACROSRCH directory. From the ACROSRCH directory, select the DISK1 directory. From the DISK1 directory, select SETUP.EXE. Click OK. The RUN dialog box reappears. Click OK. - The license agreement appears. Click ACCEPT. The Acrobat Reader Installer dialog box appears. There will a line saying that Acrobat Reader will be installed and a box with a "x" in it indicating that Acrobat Search will also be installed. Accept the default target directory of where the reader will be installed or change as you desire. Click install. - A dialog box appears that prompts you for your name. Enter it and click OK. The installer copies the program files to your hard disk. _____________________________________________________________ Now that installation is complete _____________________________________________________________ - In Windows PROGRAM MANAGER, select the Adobe Acrobat 2.1 program group, double click on the Adobe Reader icon to start the application. It presents you with an "open" box. - Change the default drive letter to that of your CD-ROM drive, then change to the root directory and double click on the file mainmenu.pdf. - When a category selection is made from the main menu, the associated index is activated to enable full text searching. - When a menu is opened the index for that category is opened. If you desire to use more than one index for your search you must use the procedures for adding indexes as mentioned in the user guide included with the CD-ROM and on this disc as guide.pdf in the root directory. - Arrow buttons on the menus permit movement to the next or previous page by clicking on the appropriate arrow button. - When on the first page of a Category Menu (e.g., Joint Publications Menu), you can return to the Main Menu by clicking on the left arrow button. - There is extensive assistance in the HELP menu of the application, especially by using the “Plug-In Help” option. - Ctrl-W is a quick keyboard shortcut for closing current pdf file.
