The digitized Bloomington Faculty Council collection features two key documents: BFC minutes and circulars. The BFC minutes are verbatim transcriptions of the monthly BFC meetings from each academic year. The circulars are supplementary documents that often serve as the basis of discussions at BFC meetings and range in scope from Memorial Resolutions to policy changes in the Academic Calendar or Faculty Handbook. The Indiana University Bloomington Faculty Council Minutes web site will be continually updated to provide access to past minutes.
Searching Minutes and Circulars
The search page is designed to support single or multiple query entries, which can be combined with more than one Boolean (AND, OR, NOT), exact phrase ("") and stemming (*) (?) operators.
The primary form of searching is full text (keyword) searching of the meeting minutes and circulars. Other fields available to help narrow your search: name, year
Search Fields: Keyword
Keyword searching of the meeting minutes and circulars will result in a full text search against the entire document.
Search Fields: Name
Conduct a names keyword search. You should try various forms of the name such as Last Name, First Name or First Name Last Name.
For example, Wells, Herman; Bill Gates. Enter only the last name if you are unsure of the first name.
Search Fields: Year
To search for years during which the minutes or circulars were published/recorded, enter the year as: yyyy
For example, 2001
Search Filter: Date Range
All years are searched unless otherwise specified. You can narrow your search by entering a month/year date range. Years must be entered as yyyy (e.g. 1982).
More than one term typed per search field will be interpreted as an AND search; all words entered will be searched. Use the Boolean menu to combine terms; AND/OR typed into the search fields will be ignored.
Exact Phrase
Double-quotes ("") should be used to specify an exact search: For example, "Indiana University Foundation" will find all records containing this exact phrase, but it will not find records containing "IU Foundation."
Broaden your search by using an asterisk (*) or question mark (?). For example, diploma* will find diploma, diplomatic and so on and wom?an will find woman and women.
Browsing Minutes and Circulars: Year
You can browse the meeting minutes by year or range of years the meeting notes were recorded/published. Minutes are organized in descending chronological order by a range of years, then by year, and finally by month. You can browse the meeting circulars by the academic year in which they were published.
By default, the results appear 20 records to a page and are sorted by relevance. The record display contains a linked title, which leads to the full document view of the minutes or circulars, date published and linked search matches, which take you to the precise area in the document in which your search term occurs.
Along with the default relevance sort, you can sort results by date published (reverse chronological order).
Document Views
Table of Contents View
By default, you will see the "Table of Contents" document view. This view contains the document's table of contents, organized hierarchically by section headings, which can be used for internal document navigation. To expand a section, click on the "+" next to the heading. To collapse a section, click on the "-" next to the heading. You can also click on "Expand All" or "Collapse All."
Search term matches are designated by the number of hits the term yields within a particular section. The numbers will appear next to the appropriate section in the Table of Contents. If you select a section that contains an occurrence of your search term, the term will appear bolded and highlighted in the document.
If the documents contain more than 1 occurrence of your search term, next to your search term, you will see either a left-pointing arrow, a right-pointing arrow or both (see example below). Click on these arrows to jump to the previous or next occurrence of your search term. Previous and Next hits
In the "Table of Contents" view, you can also conduct a full text search within a particular document.
Printer-Friendly View
The "Printer-Friendly" view presents the entire text of the document on one page, formatted for printing. To print this page, use your browser's Print function.
Editorial Conventions
The following editorial conventions are used to show edits that have been made to the original minutes or circulars:
Additions to the original text of a document will render in red and will be underlined. See Circular B21-2007 for an example of additions.
Deletions from the original text will render in strikethrough. See Circular B21-2007 for an example of deletions.
Corrections refer to instances where text has been struck and replaced with new text. In these cases the new text will appear in red and will be underlined, while the deleted original text will appear in strikethrough. See Circular B21-2007 for an example of corrections.
This is how a note will render. Notes about items in minutes or circulars will be indicated with text blocked off in a blue box on the right side of the document. See Circular B30-2007 for an example of notes.
