| description: | The photograph seen here is a composite of at least seven photographs. The Indiana University Marching 100 started marching at the left end of the field seen here. Every 15 yards or so a member of the band nearest the viewer would fire off a starters pistol which signaled the band to morph into the next letter (they did this while still marching toward the other end of the field). As the band finished morphing into each letter a photograph was taken. The photographs were then reassembled into what looks like one photograph. This event was the first time anywhere that a marching band had spelled out an entire word in continuous drill. This image was used on page 12 of the November 1939 Indiana Alumni Magazine as part of a story on the Marching Hundred since 1896.
