Presents the five major groups of algae and describes their great diversity of size, form, habitat, and means of reproduction, and their ecological and economic importance. Shows varieties of algae representing green, bule-green, red, brown, and diatom groups. Pictures by time-lapse photography actual examples of fission, spore release, fragmentation, and daughter-colony formation. Shows sexual reproduction by fission and by penetration. Points to algae as the untimate source of food for all aquatic animals, as a source of stabilizers for many of our foods, and as a promising food source for space flights.
