Introduction This CD-ROM provides information, a sample case study, and imagery pertaining to the use of remote sensing systems for detecting, characterizing, and monitoring coastal erosion. This information is presented in an HTML format that can be viewed on various computer platforms. This CD-ROM contains the web-browser Internet Explorer for viewing all text information, graphics, and video on the IBM PC platform. The following section provides necessary information for the general user to install and operate this CD-ROM. It can be easily installed on a laptop or desktop computer with the information provided on this page. System Requirements and Installation Procedures Minimum System Requirements: IBM PC and MAC - Web Browser (HTML 2.0 compliant - Internet Explorer provided for IBM PC) - 16 MB RAM (32 MB for Java applications) - 4x CD-ROM drive UNIX - Web Browser (HTML 2.0 compliant) - 4x CD-ROM drive Installation and Operation of the Web Browser: 1. Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive. 2. If you have a web browser (Netscape 2.0, Internet Explorer 2.0) already installed, start that application. a. From the browser, pull down the File Menu, select Open file, and point to your CD-ROM drive. b. Click on the "startup.htm" file, and click OK. 3. If you do not have a web browser or a web browser that is HTML 2.0 compliant: a. Microsoft Explorer is loaded on this CD-ROM. Change directories to the IEXPLORE directory and list the available executables. b. Click open the executable that corresponds to your system's operating system. 1) Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95 users, click open the executable that corresponds to your operating system. These are self extracting executables that will install Internet Explorer onto your hard drive. - ie302mnt.exe 3.02 for Win NT 4.0 - ie302m95.exe 3.02 for Win 95 2) Windows 3.5.1 and Windows 3.1 users need to copy the executable to the local hard drive. You may want to create a new directory to put the executable into. Run the executable, this will extract several files into the directory that you are working. Next, run the setup.exe program. You may want to select REFRESH from the Windows pulldown menu to see the setup.exe. - minnt30f.exe 3.02 for Win NT 3.5.1 - dlmini21.exe 2.1 for Win 3.1 3) Macintosh users should copy the iemac3.hqx file to the hard drive and use StuffIt to convert this file into a Macintosh executable. Run this executable to install Internet Explorer. - iemac3.hqx 3.0 for Macintosh c. Follow the installation instructions and start the Internet Explorer application. Note: Due to the NOAA-CSC's licensing agreement, the end-user does not have to register the browser with Microsoft as explained in the start-up window. If the end-user would like to register the browser out of courtesy to Microsoft, or to be placed onto Microsoft's mailing list for future information, then you may contact them directly. d. From the browser, pull down the File Menu, select Open file, and point to your CD-ROM drive. e. Click on the "startup.htm" file, and click OK. Note: - If you have Microsoft Windows 95, then a copy of Internet Explorer may be already loaded on your machine. - There are no Internet Explorer executables available for UNIX based machines. - For best viewing, enlarge the Web Browser to full screen size. - Within each hurricane page a Java based image viewer is available for simultaneous browsing of the turbidity or SST image sets. This applet has been successfully tested with Netscape 3.01 and 4.03. Internet Explorer may not perform satisfactorily. User must enable Java within the browser (usually found under Options or Preferences). A Pentium class CPU and 32 Mbytes of RAM are necessary for this applet to perform smoothly.
