Hurricane Gordon

November 8-21, 1994

Perspective view for Gordon

About this image

Gordon made it's initial U.S. landfall over southwestern Florida as a Tropical Storm. It's earlier impact on Haiti had resulted in an estimated 1,122 deaths primarily from mudslides. The late season storm caused considerable beach erosion in the Carolinas and spawned tornadoes over Florida. Storm total rainfall amounts varied from 6-16 inches. Total damage estimates from Gordon within the U.S. were $400 million. The majority of damage was due to fresh water flooding of Florida's agricultural areas.

Ocean Turbidity

Turbidity spikes are seen in the Cape Canaveral area of Florida and to the south in the after image. The after image is 3 days following Gordon's landfall near Cape Canaveral as a Tropical Depression and almost 7 days after Gordon had initially moved across Florida as a Tropical Storm. The difference image reveals that the turbidity in Florida Bay also increased. Bright areas in the vicinity of the Bahamas are due to bottom reflection.
