Hurricane Bob
August 16-29, 1991
Bob, a category 2 hurricane, made landfall on Cape Cod, Massachusetts
and again in Maine on August 19. Hurricane Bob was the eighth costliest
U.S. mainland hurricane with total damage estimated at $1.5 billion.
A total of 18 deaths were attributed to this hurricane.
Ocean Turbidity
The after represents 11 days following the movement of
hurricane Bob through this region. Therefore it is difficult to
assess whether the turbidity increases offshore of the coasts
of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia were the result of sediments
still resuspended due to Bob's passing or were perhaps due to
another meteorological disturbance subsequent to Bob. An alternate
possibility could be that these turbidity increases are the signature
of a post-hurricane phytoplankton bloom caused by a sudden increase
in available nutrients due to storm induced water column mixing.
