Hurricane Elena is seen directly off the coast of Florida at an instant in its meandering path. It would make landfall on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi on September 2, 1985.

This image was derived from the visible, near and thermal IR bands from the AVHRR aboard the NOAA-9 satellite. It was created by draping an RGB image over a digital elevation model (DEM) generated from cloud top temperatures. The DEM was derived from an inverted channel 4 band (thermal IR) while the RGB image was created using channel 4, channel 2 (near IR) , and channel 1 (visible). The perspective view represents an elevation of 87° from horizontal. The date of this scene is September 1, 1985 at 18:57 UTC.
