Hurricane Bob is seen off the coast of the Carolinas on August 17 before trekking northward. Although only a category 2 hurricane, Bob became the 8th costliest hurricane to strike the mainland.

All the data in this image were derived from the visible, near and thermal IR bands from the AVHRR aboard the NOAA-11 satellite. The image was created by draping an RGB image over a digital elevation model (DEM) generated from cloud top temperatures. The DEM was derived from an inverted channel 4 band (thermal IR) while the RGB image was created using channel 4, channel 2 (near IR) , and channel 1 (visible). The perspective view represents an elevation of 80° from horizontal. The date of this scene is August 17, 1991 at 18:41 UTC.
