Set Edit|Word Wrap to view this file in notepad.exe, 9:48 AM 7/17/2001 This file is the readme.txt file in the CD root directory. It contains brief instructions for installing Energy InfoDisc. More details are provided in the help file, infodisc.hlp. FAQ.htm also provides quick answers to questions. Disks 1 and 2 are independent. Disk 1 contains documents and Disk 2 contains applications. LAN Installations ----------------- You must have a fixed drive letter assigned to your LAN server ID for the installation to work. e.g. f:\ for \\myServer\\. The CD should work from a carousel. The InfoDisc can be installed from a LAN, but each user needs an individual installation in order to correctly track the software and file locations. There is no licensing issue with EIA, Adobe or Microsoft concerning the shared run-time versions of the software. The databases are by default all installed on the users hard drive. They may be shared by choosing to install them on a LAN drive while keeping each users local directory c:\eia_cd for housekeeping. The installation is in several parts! --------------------------------- The first part checks that you have an up-to-date copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader versions 4 or 5. If you do not then install it from the Adobe website (since there are now several versions) and then restart the installation from CD1 Adobe Acrobat Reader and Search Plug-In --------------------------------------- Our documents are in Adobe portable document format files. To VIEW documents AND conduct full text SEARCHES, you MUST install the Adobe Acrobat Reader or already have Adobe Acrobat Reader or Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer. InfoDisc will also function with earlier versions of Adobe Reader, but you may not have a full text search capability. Applications ------------ All applications are installed and/or run via the database html pages viewed in the browser. This also creates icons in the "Energy InfoDisc" group for running the application and for removing it. What is Installed? ----------------- For the InfoDisc you will receive 3-4 icons. (1) One to invoke the browser of your choice and launch the CD-ROM. (2) One for the InfoDisc help file. (3) One to un-install the software. Also installed is eiaview.exe, a customized helper application used to connect and invoke smart applications and databases from within html hypertext. When you click on the icon for any application on the InfoDisc screens, you will be asked if you wish to "open with eiaview.exe" or "save this file to disk". For InfoDisc ALWAYS choose OPEN. You may wish to uncheck the box "always ask" to avoid this behavior for this eiaview.exe only. un-install --------- An un-install capability and icon is added to the settings for "Energy InfoDisc", or to the add/remove programs icon on the control panel. Any remaining directories may be deleted. Other Information ----------------- See infodisc.hlp for more details on installing and operating the software and various work-arounds. Our Web site ----------- View http://www.eia.doe.gov for online updates to this CD. Look on the InfoDisc page where we have fix and update sections for newer databases.
