EXTutor will help you learn EXTRACT EXTutor is a series of learning aids designed to teach you about Census Bureau CD-ROMs and your software options for working with the data. The focus is particularly on the EXTRACT software, and the series currently includes 3 step-by-step tutorials, accompanied by text that helps you learn how to set up your own inquiries into the databases on CD. The text is actually adapted from presentation notes Paul Zeisset and Bob Marske have been using in their own workshops for EXTRACT users. The text and format are now primarily designed for users who want to go through the recommended keystrokes in becoming acquainted with EXTRACT at their own PCs. The style is similar to that of the BBS "monographs". Advanced users may adapt these materials as the basis for their own presentations about CD-ROM and EXTRACT. There are currently four main components to the EXTutor package: EXTutor An introductory text discussing CD-ROM advantages, software options, and the structure of the economic census CD-ROMs. EXTutor1 An exercise going through EXTRACT at its most basic: simple item and record selection, creation of new headings, and extraction of data to a file for import into Lotus 1-2-3. Economic Census CD- ROM 1C or 1D may be used. EXTutor2 An exercise dealing with a more complicated data query: adding labels and selecting records in more than one way, with a discussion of search strategies. Uses disc 1C or 1D. EXTutor3 An exercise acquainting the user with EXTRACT's ability to perform simple calculations through "user-defined items", as well as various formatting options, such as toggling between rowwise and columnar display and adjusting column widths. This exercise uses PL94-171 discs, and discusses search strategies appropriate to those files. EXVwGrph Text contained on a series of viewgraphs and a handout designed to be used in the presentation contained in EXTutor. If you would like a paper copy of the formated viewgraphs and handout, you may request a copy of the entire EXTutor package from-- Economic Census Staff Bureau of the Census Washington, D.C. 20233 Phone (301) 763-1792 EXTutor is a work in progress.
