You must specify a CD-ROM drive letter. This is the letter assigned when the reader was installed; often, the reader is assigned the letter "L". 2. You also will be asked to specify a "work directory." This is any directory on your hard disk (e.g., C:\EXTRACT\WORK), which EXTRACT can use to store temporary files; be sure to create the directory before attempting to use it in EXTRACT! 3. When the system asks for the location of auxiliary files, specify the subdirectory where you installed the auxiliary files for the CD-ROM you are using, e.g., C:\EXTRACT\1990AUX. 4. Confirm those selections with es or ave. If you ave, the system will ask you to name a command that will let you skip these steps in the future. Use a different one for each type of CD you have, for example, EX1A, EX1B, EX1C, EX3A, EX3C, EXEEO, or EXPL94. ------------ | MSTREEO | 5. Select a "master" catalog from a box that looks like this: | MSTRST1A | Cursor down to the one appropriate to the CD you are using. | MSTRST1B | If one of the entries is MASTER and none of the other | MSTRST1C | entries seem appropriate, select MASTER. | MSTRST3A | | MSTRST3B | [If this box does not appear, confirm that the EXTRACT.EXE | MSTRST3C | on your hard disk is dated July 1992 or later.] | MSTRPL94 | ------------ **************************************************************************** ** For More Information ** For general instructions in using EXTRACT, see the documentation, EXTRACT.DOC, which is distributed together with the EXTRACT software. Specific information about how EXTRACT works with 1990 Census CD-ROMs appears near the end of EXTRACT.DOC. Step-by-step tutorials on the use of STF 1A are in the file EXTUTOR4, and on the use of EEO files are in EXTUTOR5, both text files distributed with EXTRACT. ****************************************************************************
