**************************************************************************** EXPORTS AND IMPORTS AUXILIARY FILES ("Lite" version) **************************************************************************** This package contains auxiliary files to allow EXTRACT to work with the monthly "US Exports of Merchandise" and "US Imports of Merchandise" CD-ROM discs. This is a compact or "lite" version of the auxiliaries designed to require only limited hard disk space (130 kilobytes instead of 3.5 megabytes). Relative to the regular version of these auxiliaries destributed in FTDAUX.EXE, FTDAUXEX.EXE, FTDAUXM1.EXE, and FTDAUXM2.EXE), the "lite" version relies on the commodity descriptions as they already exist on the CD-ROM rather than storing somewhat more readable versions on the hard disk. The consequences of using the "lite" version are noticed only when selecting records by commodity. Commodity descriptions are shown upper-case only, and when selecting 10-digit commodities, the 2-, 4-, and 6-digit commodity hierarchy is not visible. Display of the commodity menus is also much slower. If you make only infrequent use of the imports and exports discs, this may be a reasonable tradeoff in order to save 3.4 megabytes of hard disk space. The package contains the following files: FTD_READ.ME [this text file] FTDAUXLT.EXE [auxiliary files for all Foreign Trade discs, compressed] **************************************************************************** ** Installing these files for the first time ** 1. Create a new directory on your hard disk, and make this the current directory. (Do not use a directory in use for other auxiliary files.) MD \FTDAUXIL CD \FTDAUXIL 2. Uncompress the files onto your hard disk: a:FTDAUXLT The FTDAUXLT.EXE file is a "self-extracting" archive that contain catalog, data dictionary and other auxiliary files which EXTRACT needs in order to select and display data from the Export and Import CD-ROMs. **************************************************************************** ** Installing these files in place of previously installed auxiliaries ** 1. Erase the auxiliary files previously in your \FTDAUXIL directory CD\FTDAUXIL ERASE *.CT* ERASE *.D* ERASE *.NDX ERASE *.TXT 2. Uncompress the new files onto your hard disk: a:FTDAUXLT **************************************************************************** ** Starting EXTRACT to work with Export and Import files ** 1. Make the directory with EXTRACT.EXE in it the current directory: CD \EXTRACT 2. Start the program. EXTRACT 3. You will be asked to specify some drives and directories. If your configuration includes a CD-ROM reader, you must specify a CD-ROM drive letter. This is the letter you assigned when you first installed the reader; often, the reader is assigned the letter "L". You also will be asked to specify a "work directory." This is any directory on your hard disk (e.g., \WORK), which EXTRACT uses to store temporary files; be sure to create the directory before using it in EXTRACT! When the system asks for the location of auxiliary files, specify the subdirectory where you installed these files, e.g. c:\FTDAUXIL. **************************************************************************** ** For More Information ** See the documentation, EXTRACT.DOC, available on Economic Census CD-ROMs or compressed within EXTRCT13.EXE, available separately. ****************************************************************************
