STICKLES, ARNDT MATHIAS: 1872-

Arndt Mathias Stickles was born in Patricksburg, Ind., on Jan. 4, 1872, the son of Mathias and Elizabeth Kefaber Stickles. He obtained three degrees from Indiana University: A.B. in 1897, A.M. in 1904, and Ph.D. in 1923. He received an A.M. degree from Harvard University in 1910. He married Laura Gordon Chambers on July 26, 1911, and they had three children: Elizabeth Hume, Harriet Henry, and James Channing. Stickles began his career as a public school principal in Yorktown, Ind., in 1899 and was a history teacher in Elkhart and Evansville . He became head of the department of history at Western Kentucky State Teachers College in 1908.
