SOMES, JOSEPH HENRY VANDERBURGH: 1898-1962.

Joseph Henry Vanderburgh Somes was born in Vincennes, Ind., on March 22, 1898. He attended Saint Meinrad's Theological Seminary ( Ind. ) and earned a licentiate in canon law from Catholic University of America. Ordained in 1924, Father Somes held pastorates in Indiana in Indianapolis, Columbus, and Vincennes . In 1938 he founded Christ the King Parish ( Indianapolis ) and designed the parish church. He served four terms as president of the Sons of the American Revolution and was one of the first priests in the United States to earn a pilot's license. At the time of his death in Indianapolis on Nov. 2, 1962, he was acting director of the Archdiocesan Charities Bureau.
