SMITH, ARTHUR HILL: 1849-1906.

Arthur Hill Smith , who wrote under the name Joseph Arthur, was born in Centerville, Ind., in 1849. His parents were John C. and Margaret Hill Smith. He was married to Charlotte Cobb. His first play, Colorado, was produced in Indianapolis in 1875 but was unsuccessful. Smith's second play, The Great Encounter, produced in New York in 1888, was a hit as were his other plays that followed. He died in New York on Feb. 19, 1906.
