NOYES, WILLIAM ALBERT: 1898-

William Albert Noyes, Jr. , was born on April 18, 1898, in Terre Haute, Ind., the son of William Albert and Flora Collier Noyes. He obtained the A.B. degree in 1919 from Grinnell College and the doctor of science degree in 1920 from the University of Paris. He married Sabine Onillon on June 10, 1921, and they had one son, Claude Charles.

Noyes taught chemistry at the University of California, 1921-22; the University of Chicago, 1922-29; and Brown University, 1929-38. He joined the faculty of the University of Rochester as professor of chemistry in 1938 where he also served as chairman of the chemistry department, dean of the graduate school, and acting dean of the college of arts and sciences and retired in 1963. He has received many awards and medals and has worked on a number of commissions and assignments.
