NOYES, RUSSELL: 1901-

Born on Dec. 16, 1901, in Pittsfield Mass. , Russell Noyes is the son of Wilbur Fiske and Alice Hillman Noyes. He received the B.S. degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1924 and the degrees of A.M. in 1928 and Ph.D. in 1932 from Harvard University. On Sept. 8, 1928, he and Margaret Greenleaf were wed and they had two children, John Greenleaf and Russell, Jr. He married his second wife, Vernice Lockridge, on May 30, 1964.

Noyes began his career as a high school principal in Wilmington Vt. , 1924-26. He taught at Indiana University, 1928-29, and Boston University, 1930-31. He rejoined the faculty of Indiana University in 1932 where he became professor of English in 1948. He served as chairman of the department, 1941-51, and retired in 1972. Noyes was president of Indiana College English Association in 1949.
