NICHOLS, EGBERT RAY: 1884-1958.

Egbert Ray Nichols was born in Mount Ayr, Ind., on May 6, 1884. He was the son of John Frederick and Mary Ellen Roberts Nichols. He received a Ph.B. degree from Franklin College in 1907, A.M. degree from Harvard University in 1909, and honorary Litt.D. degree from Franklin College in 1942. He married Elsie Grace Stubbe on June 16, 1911, and they had one son, Egbert Ray.

Nichols began his career as an instructor in English at Ottawa University in 1909 and taught at Ripon College, 1911-13. He joined the faculty of the University of the Redlands in 1913 where he remained until 1952. He was a Fulbright exchange professor in Germany , 1952-53, and president of the Western Association of Teachers of Speech, 1954. Nichols was founder and editor of FORENSIC MAGAZINE, 1914-20, and founder and first editor of DEBATERS MAGAZINE, 1945- He also edited many publications in the speech field and died on April 5, 1958.
