NEWMARK, LEONARD : 1909-

Leonard Newmark son of Max J. and Sophie Glasker Newmark, was born on April 8, 1919, in Attica, Ind. He earned the A.B. degree from the University of Chicago in 1947 and the degrees of A.M. in 1951 and Ph.D. in 1955 from Indiana University. Fie married Ruth Broessler on Sept. 16, 1951, and they had one daughter, Katya. Newmark taught at Ohio State University, 1954-62, and Indiana University, 1962-63. In 1963 he became professor of linguistics and chairman of the department at the University of California (San Diego). He has been the recipient of grants from the Social Science Research Council, 1951 and 1953; American Philosophical Society, 1957; and the National Science Foundation, 1963. In addition to the volumes listed below, Newmark has written two books on Albanian grammar and language.
