NEWLON, JESSE HOMER: 1882-1941.

Jesse Homer Newlon was born on July 16, 1882, in Salem, Ind. He was the son of Richard Rosecrans and Arra Belle Cauble Newlon. He received an A.B. degree from Indiana University in 1907, an A.M. degree from Columbia University in 1914, and an LL.D. degree from the University of Denver in 1922. He married Letha Hiestand on Dec. 09, 1909.

Newlon was a high school principal in Charlestown, Ind., during 1905-06 and subsequently held similar positions in Illinois, Nebraska, and Indiana . He was superintendent of schools in Lincoln, Nebr., 1917-20, and Denver, Colo., 1920-27. He joined the faculty of Teachers College, Columbia University, where he was director of the Lincoln Experimental School, 1927-37, and remained until his death on Sept. 1, 1941. He was president of the National Education Association, 1924-25, and served on many boards and commissions chartered for the improvement of education in the United State . Newlon was associate editor of School. EXECUTIVE, 1927-41, and was awarded the Butler Medal by Columbia University in 1925.
