NEWBERRY, GENE WILSON: 1915-

Gene Wilson Newberry was born in Garrison, Ky., on April 3, 1915, the son of Thomas H. and Irene Sullivan Newberry. He graduated from Rio Grande Junior College ( Ohio ) in 1935. He received the A.B. degree from Denison University in 1937, B.Th. degree from Anderson College School of Theology in 1938, Ph.D. degree from Duke University in 1950, and D.D. degree from Rio Grande College in 1964. He married Agnes Hilligas on Aug. 20, 1938, and they had three daughters: Kay Juanita, Jill Diane, and Beth Elaine. Newberry joined the faculty of Anderson College in 1946 where he became dean of the school of theology in 1962. He has preached in churches in Detroit, Cleveland, San Jose, and Baltimore . He has served as national director, Youth Fellowship of the Church of God; treasurer, American Association of Theological Schools, 1968-70; and president, Board of Church Extension of the Church of God.
