ASHBAUGH, ERNEST JAMES: 1883-

Ernest James Ashbaugh was born in Blackford County, Ind., on July. 15, 1883, the son of David and Louisa Morris Ashbaugh. He received two degrees from Indiana University, A.B. in 1912 and A.M. in 1913, and a Ph.D. degree from the State University of Iowa in 1919. He married Tacy Hope Smith on June. 30, 1907, and they had one daughter, Beulah Rhea. Ashbaugh began his career in education as a high school principal in Matthews, Ind., in 1906 where he was school superintendent, 1907-09. He subsequently held several other school positions and served as director of the bureau of educational service at the State University of Iowa in 1914. He was assistant director of the bureau of educational research at Ohio State University, 1921-29, and in 1929 became dean of the school of education at Miami University (Oxford, Ohio). He wrote many bulletins on school surveys and edited THE JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH.
