ADAIR, ROBERT KEMP: 1924-

A native of Fort Wayne, Ind., Robert Kemp Adair was born on Aug. 14, 1924, the son of Robert Cleland and Margaret Weigman Adair. He received the Ph.B. degree in 1947 and the Ph.D. degree in 1951 from the University of Wisconsin. On June. 21, 1952, he married Eleanor Reed and they had three children: Douglas McVeigh, Margaret Guthrie, and James Cleland.

Adair taught at the University of Wisconsin, 1950-53, and was a physicist at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. He joined the faculty of Yale University in 1958 and became chairman of the physics department in 1967. He was a fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, Ford Foundation, Sloane Foundation, and American Physical Society. Adair served in the U.S. Army, 1943-46, and was associate editor of PHYSICAL REVIEW, 1963-66.
