BUTLER, AMOS WILLIAM: 1860-1937.

Amos William Butler , son of William Wallace and Hannah Wright Butler, was born in Brookville, Ind., on Oct. 1, 1860. He was graduated from Indiana University in 1894 with the A.B. degree and received the A.M. degree in 1900. On June 2, 1880, he married Mary I. Reynolds. In 1896-97 he was ornithologist in the Department of Geology and Resources of Indiana; from 1897 to 1923 he was secretary of the Indiana Board of State Charities; and in 1928-29 he was senior sociologist in the U. S. Bureau of Efficiency.

Mr. Butler was a member of various commissions and boards and was a delegate from the U. S. to international conferences on prisons. He was the author of many books and papers on sociology, zoology, agriculture, and economics. He died on Aug. 5, 1937.
