BURTON, CHARLES PIERCE: 1862-
Charles Pierce Burton , born in Anderson, Ind., on Mar. 7, 1862, lived there only three months. He is qualified by birth for inclusion here, and, when he once expressed doubt as to his eligibility to be known as an Indiana author, he was assured by Booth Tarkington that "three months was long enough for inoculation."
His mother died when he was ten months old, and he lived with his grandmother and a maternal aunt until 1873, when his father re-married and brought him to Aurora, Ill., where the senior Burton was editor and publisher of a weekly newspaper. With the exception of three years in Valparaiso and Gary, Ind., 1912-16, Charles Pierce Burton remained in Aurora as newspaper and trade paper editor, contributor to periodicals and writer of juvenile fiction.
