BURCHENAL, ELIZABETH: 1877-
Born in Richmond, Ind., in 1877, Elizabeth Burchenal received the B.L. degree from Earlham College and graduated from the Sargent College of Physical Education. She taught physical education at Horace Mann School, Barnard College, and Columbia University from 1902 to 1905 and was then employed by the New York Public Schools until 1916. She began her researches in folk dances and folk dance music in 1904.
In 1916 she organized the American Folk Dance Society and in 1929 became permanent director of the organization, promoting interest in the folk arts through writing and lecturing. Besides the titles listed Miss Burchenal compiled and edited at least a half dozen collections of folk dances and games.
