BRYAN, WILLIAM LOWE: 1860-

William Lowe Bryan , president of Indiana University for thirty-five years, was born near Bloomington, Ind., on Nov. 11, 1860, a son of the Rev. John and Eliza Jane Philips Bryan. Following his graduation from Indiana University in 1884 he taught at the University and studied for the A.M. degree, which he received in 1886. He also studied in Berlin, Paris, and Wurzburg, and in 1892 he received the Ph.D. from Clark University. He was later the recipient of honorary degrees from numerous colleges and universities.

He married Charlotte Augusta Lowe of Indianapolis , on July 13, 1889. Dr. Bryan was professor of philosophy at Indiana University from 1885 to 1902, acted as vice-president from 1893 to 1902 and served as president from 1902 to 1937. Besides the works listed in this sketch he was the author of numerous contributions to periodicals, translations and occasional addresses.

During President Bryan's administration Indiana University grew phenomenally in enrollment, standing and physical property.
