BLATCHLEY, WILLIS STANLEY: 1859-1940.

Willis Stanley Blatchley , scientist and author, was born at North Madison, Conn., in 1859. In 1860 his family came to Hendricks County, Ind., where he received his early education. He graduated from Indiana University in 1887 with the A.B. degree and received the A.M. degree from the same institution in 1891 and the LL.D. in 1921. In 1882 he married Clara A. Fordice of Russellville, Ind.

Before becoming state geologist of Indiana (1894-1911), he taught in the Terre Haute High School. Mr. Blatchley was the author of hundreds of papers on geology and entomology. From 1911 until his death he traveled extensively, was a member of scientific expeditions, and wrote many books on geology and natural history.

He died on May 28, 1940.
