BEHARRELL, THOMAS G.: 1824-?
The Rev. Thomas G. Beharrell was born in Huntingdonshire, England , on Dec. 17, 1824, the son of H. Beharrell, a Wesleyan minister. The latter emigrated to American in 1837 and settled in Evansville, Ind. Later he became the Wesleyan minister in New page: 24[View Page 24] Albany, Ind. Thomas Beharrell was educated in the common schools and for two years at a private school in New Albany. Although at first interested in medicine, he soon turned to the ministry, studying while teaching school.
He was pastor of churches in several Indiana towns and cities–Shelbyville, Madison, Jeffersonville, and Indianapolis. In 1849, in Indianapolis, he married Miss Sarah Ellen Hughes. He received the honorary A.M. degree from Indiana Asbury (now De Pauw University) in 1860, and the LL.D. degree from Indiana University in 1877. In addition to his work as a minister, he was an active member of the Independent Order of Odd-Fellows and of the Masons and was also an enthusiastic temperance worker.
