BALLARD, GRANVILLE MELLEN: 1833-1926.
Born on Mar. 30, 1833, in Westport, Ky., Granville Mellen Ballard was the son of Dr. Chester Ballard, and Helda Simonds Ballard. The family later moved to Greencastle, Ind., where Dr. Ballard was associated with the administration of Asbury Institute, now De Pauw University.
Following his graduation from Indiana Asbury (now De Pauw) University in 1851, he served for a time as private secretary to Gov. Joseph A. Wright of Indiana. He married Martha Stilwell of Indianapolis in 1865.
He was a teacher at the Indiana School for the Blind and, until fifteen years before his death, engaged in the real estate business in Indianapolis, being forced to retire because of illness.
He died in Indianapolis on July 20, 1926.
