BALDWIN, JAMES: 1841-1925.
James Baldwin was born in Hamilton County, Ind., on Dec. 15, 1841, the son of Isaac and Sarah Clayton Baldwin. Although he had some instruction in the district schools, he was largely self-taught. After teaching for three years in his native county, he became, in 1869, superintendent of city graded schools in Indiana, a position he held until 1887 when he accepted a post with Harper & Brothers publishing house in New York . From 1894 to 1924 he was editor of school books for the American Book Company. He died Aug. 30, 1925.
Besides the titles listed here, Baldwin was the author, editor and compiler of dozens of textbooks in the fields of literature, history and mathematics.
