BAILEY, JOHN WILLIAM: 1873-

John William Bailey , son of James Perry and Virginia Caroline Coker Bailey, was born on May 5, 1873, in Scott County, Ind. He was educated at Franklin College (A.B., 1898) and at the Divinity School, University of Chicago (B.D., 1901; Ph.D., 1904). He received the D.D. degree from Franklin College in 1941.

In 1905 he was ordained in the Baptist ministry and began his work as pastor in Fairbury, Ill. He later held pastorates at Oshkosh, Wis., and Pella, la. From 1914 to 1917 he was president of Central College and from 1918 to 1923 president of Colorado Woman's College. In 1923 he became a professor at Berkeley Baptist Divinity School.

Dr. Bailey was twice married: first to Celestine Marcella Wood, who died in 1938, then, in 1940, to Louise White Herron.
