Note on the Scope and Use of This Work
1. The compilers have endeavored to include all writers of books (other than textbooks, purely technical works, and contributions to periodical or serial publications) who published prior to 1916, the centennial of Indiana's statehood.
2. Writers are included who (a) were born in Indiana, (b) were reared and educated in Indiana, (c) whose literary work began during residence in Indiana and was obviously influenced by Indiana residence, or (d) who chose Indiana as a place in which to spend a major portion of their lives.
3. Writers are listed, in so far as the knowledge of the compilers extends, by name and, in the case of women, by married name.
4. The abbreviation "n.p." indicates that no place of publication appears on the title page. If the place is known the name of the city appears in brackets. The same applies to date of publication (abbreviated "n.d."). When no information is given as to place or date it is due to the fact that while the book is stated upon good authority to have been published, no copy was available for examination.
5. The Wabash College Library and the Indiana State Library have on file the original notes for this work plus sketches and bibliographies of some hundreds of Indiana writers who were discovered, upon research, to be ineligible because of insufficient residence, absence of published works before 1916 or other reasons. These institutions will welcome correspondence correcting errors in this publication or furnishing additional material upon writers included or not included herein.
