Metadata that drives search, browse, and record display on the Hohenberger site is stored in the MODS metadata format. The Lilly Library maintains a set of inventories for the collection in Word. These were converted to EAD in the mid-1990s for use in the original online Hohenberger delivery site. About 500 of the earliest scanned images received subject headings shortly thereafter.
In 2009 and 2010 this legacy EAD data was converted into item-level MODS records for ingestion into our Fedora digital object repository and for use with the DLP's MODS-based image delivery system. These MODS records are now maintained through PhotoCat, a custom built web application that interacts directly with objects stored in Fedora. With this shift, the IU Libraries can now more easily update records and perform additional subject analysis on images, which can then be automatically loaded into the Hohenberger delivery system.
