Scope Note:
Each member of the Golden family acted and sang. Therefore, it is not
surprising that there should be an extensive amount of music in this
collection. It is divided into three sections: sheet music, instrumental
music, and publications. The sheet music comprises 181 individual pieces and
three bound collections, the single sheets being accommodated in two 123 X
17 cm. boxes. The instrumental music, totalling 218 items, contains both
manu- scripts and print. It covers popular airs of the day, concent pieces,
and operatic arias. The printed material contains bound copies of specific
works and opera dcores and librettos (owned and used by Grace Golden). The
arrangements are scored for the piano and - various other instruments. One
series of 13 bound manuscripts apparently served the Golden Troupe's
orchestra for many of its performances.
A small but useful group of publications contains periodicals and books or
booklets. These include monthlies like Keynote and Folio, which were devoted
to music, drama, literature and art. The book assortment is small but
contains the rare Pittsburgh Selection of Psalm Tunes... (1816)
