Abstract
This project presents the perceptions of modern theater by five different people
involved in the performance arts. Some of the topics touched upon include the
differences between the three media of stage, television, and film, beginning
experiences in the field of theater, and career paths and goals of the individual.
The theory and philosophy of acting, directing and producing is also discussed.
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains five interviews conducted over the course of one year. The interviews range from approximately 15
to 100 minutes. All interviews consist of typed transcripts and audio reels.

Acquisition Information
Oral history interviews conducted by the Indiana University Center for the
Study of History and Memory from 1968 to the present, with particular focus on the
history of twentieth-century America and the Midwest.
Usage Restrictions
The archive of the Center for the Study of History and Memory at Indiana
University is open to the use of researchers. Copies of transcript pages are
available only when such copies are permitted by the deed of gift signed by the
interviewee. Scholars must honor any restrictions the interviewee placed on the
use of the interview. Since some of our earlier (pre-computer) transcripts do
not exist in final form, any editing marks in a transcript (deletions,
additions, corrections) are to be quoted as marked. Tapes may not be copied for
patrons unless the deed of gift permits it, and a transcript is unavailable for
that interview. The same rules of use that apply to a transcript apply to the
taped interview. Interviews may not be reproduced in full for any public use,
but excerpted quotes may be used as long as researchers fully cite the data in
their research, including accession number, interview date, interviewee's and
interviewer's name, and page(s).

Robert Benedetti, dean of the theater department at the California Institute of
the Arts, discusses his career, his teaching methods, and philosophy of theater
in general. He touches upon some early experiences that led him to a career in
theater. He also discusses the relationship between the actor and director in
support of the directorless theater movement, some of which he employs when
teaching his acting classes. He also touches upon the difference between acting
live on stage and in front of a camera.

Jane Brody, born August 13, 1945, talks about her experiences as an actress.
She started acting at a young age and spent her twenties traveling throughout
the country acting in dinner theaters and festivals. She discusses her current
struggles in Los Angeles, California attempting to find the right agent, trying
to get auditions, and simply trying to be cast in a production. She closes the
interview with advice to young actors.
