Biographical Note

Fanto was born in Budapest, Hungary on August 4, 1911. He was a cinematographer who photographed what became Welles's unfinished documentary on Latin America, It's All True; followed by Welles's screen adaptation of Othello (released in Europe in 1952 and the United States in 1955).

Arrangement

Arranged in the following series: I. Correspondence, II. Script materials, III. Miscellaneous, IV. Photographs, V. Clippings.

Scope and Content Note

Fanto first worked with Welles in Brazil in 1941. The majority of the materials in the collection are from 1949-1950 during the filming of Othello in Europe and North Africa. Most of the letters in the collection are from Welles to Fanto. Other items include a partial script, shooting instructions and financial materials for Othello, a script for the play Time Runs, a partial script for the proposed film Twice Is Too Much, a playbill for the Unthinking Lobster and Time Runs, and a synopsis of a proposed film Life Is a Song. The photographs include a portrait of Welles and photographs taken during the filming of It's All True and Othello.
