The Fetter mss., 1875-1988, consists of letters and papers of Frank Albert Fetter,
1863-1949, economist. The papers in the collection relate in the main to monopolies,
anti-trust legislation, Federal Trade Commission, and the basing point system of
pricing particularly in the steel and cement industries. In addition to manuscripts
there is printed and mimeographed material including miscellaneous numbers of
periodicals, reprints, clippings, pamphlets, briefs of court cases and Federal Trade
Commission hearings, and some government documents. Included also in the collection
is correspondence, 1900-1901, relating to the dismissal of Edward Alsworth Ross from
the faculty of Stanford University under circumstances which, it was claimed,
involved the freedom of teaching, and Fetter's resignation as a result of this
affair. The correspondence is largely between Fetter and David Starr Jordan, but
there are also letters from other persons, most of them being members of university
faculties.
