Abstract
The mission of the GLBT Student Support
Services office is to provide information, support, mentoring, and counseling to
members of the IU campus and the larger community. They seek to do that through
networks, collaboration, education, and outreach in an attempt to create a climate
where all members of the community are encouraged to promote and defend diversity.
The collection consists of records relating to campus programming, speakers and
events, conferences, and office administration.
Access Restrictions
Select files are closed to researchers at this time. These are indicated in the
folder list. Restricted files are listed where they would fall in the intellectual
arrangement of the collection but are physically located at the end of the
collection.
Advance notice is required for access.
Administrative History
Serious discussions about the formation of a campus support center for gays and
lesbians began in the late 1980s. A task force was appointed in 1990 to gather
information on such a center, and after three years of research members of the task
force submitted a report formally recommending that such an office be created.
In the fall of 1994, the Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Support Services office opened
amidst both support and controversy. Transsexual would not be added to the office’s
name until 1997. Doug Bauder, who is gay and an ordained minister, was hired to be
the coordinator of the office. Bauder has held the position since its opening.
The office of the GLBT Support Services strives to be a resource center for all
members of the Indiana University campus, not just those who fall under the GLBT
label. The office contains a library of materials that focus on GLBT issues. It also
serves as a center of education, collaboration, and networking for those interested
in the GLBT community and promoting diversity on campus.
Arrangement
This collection is arranged into three series: Program files, Conferences, and
Administrative files. The Program files series is further organized into two
sub-series: Campus programs & activism and Speakers and events.
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains the records of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender
Student Support Services (GLBTSSS) office. The records span the years from 1970 to
2010. This collection is organized in to three series: Program files, Conferences,
and Administrative files.
The first series, Program files (1989-2007), is further organized into two
sub-series: Campus programs & activism and Speakers and events. The Campus
programs & activism (1989-2004) sub-series is organized alphabetically and is
comprised of materials that relate to GLBT programming and support at Indiana
University. This sub-series is differentiated from that of Speakers and events in
that these programs and task forces were typically more long-term, or were created
to address specific issues existing on campus. This sub-series also includes
information on the Educational Task Force on Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Concerns,
which was the initial group that evaluated the need for a GLBT Student Support
Services office. Additionally, this sub-series contains information on the Peer
Support Project, which involves GLBT students serving as mentors for other GLBT
students on campus that may be struggling with their sexuality. The Speakers and
Events (1990-2007) sub-series is arranged chronologically and contains
correspondence and publicity material related to the appearance of GLBT affiliated
speakers and to other events that occurred at or near Indiana University.
The second series, Conferences (2001-2009), is arranged alphabetically and contains
information on two GLBT conferences that Indiana University hosted: the Midwest
Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference (MBLGTACC), and the Sexual
Minority Youth in the Heartland Conference (SMYHL). Records from the SMYHL
conference comprise the bulk of this series, and since this conference was hosted by
IU twice, these records are further arranged by conference year. The records
contained in this series primarily include grant applications, conference programs,
and conference-related correspondence.
The final series, Administrative files (1970-2010), is arranged alphabetically and
contains primarily records on the GLBTSSS Alumni Association, annual reports of the
office, GLBT campus harassment incident reports, office-related correspondence, and
information on two GLBT themed classes that were taught at IU.
