IN SENATE.
FRIDAY, January 8, 1869.The Senate met pursuant to a standing rule at 3 p. .--the Pesident pro tem., (Hon. John E. Cravens, Senator from Jefferson county,) in the chair.
A message from the House was received informing the Senate that the House has passed the following resolution to-wit:
Resolved, That the Senate be invited to meet the House of Representatives in Joint convention, in the Hall of the house, at two o'clock p. m. of today, to receive the biennial message of his Excellency, Hon. Conrad Baker, Acting Governor of the State.
STANDING COMMITTEES.
The hour having arrived for the consideration of the special order--being the resolution authorizing the appointment of the standing committees of the Senate by the President pro tempore--
Mr. HUGHES demanded the previous question on the adoption of his resolution.
The Senate refused to second the demand, for the previous question.
Mr. CHURCH moved to postpone the consideration of the resolution till Tuesday next, at two o'clock p. m., and make it the special order for the hour.
The motion was agreed to by yeas 26, nays 14--as follows:
YEAS--Messrs, Andrews, Armstrong, Beardsley, Bellamy, Case, Caven, Church, Denbo, Elliott, Gifford, Green, Hadley, Hamilton, Hess, Hooper, Houghton, Howk, Huffman, Jaquess, Johnson of Spencer, Rice, Reynolds, Robinson of Decatur, Scott, Smith and Wood--26.
NAYS--Messrs. Bird, Bradley, Carson, Fisher, Henderson, Huey, Hughes, Humphreys, Kinley, Lee, Morgan, Stein, Turner and Wolcott--14.
So the motion to postpone was agreed to.
JOINT CONVENTION.
Mr. JAQUESS, from the joint Committee appointed to secure the services of a minister of the gospel to open the session of the Legislature with prayer, reported that the Committee had engaged the services of Rev. Mr. Sloss, of the Presbyterian Church.
On motion of Mr. CHURCH, the Senate accepted the invitation of the House of Representatives to a joint convention to receive the Governor's message.
And thereupon, at fifteen minutes past two o'clock--
Senators repaired to the hall of the House of Representatives, preceeded by the President pro tem, of the Senate.
When Senators returned to their chamber, and the President pro tem, had called the Senate to order, at twenty-five minutes past four o'clock--
Mr. JOHNSTON of Montgomery, offered a resolution, that when the Senate adjourn it adjourn till Monday next at two o'clock p. m.
The resolutton was adopted upon a division--affirmative 31; negative not counted.
A MESSAGE FROM THE HOUSE.
Was received informing the Senate that the House had passed the following resolution, to-wit:
RESOLVED, That the Senate be invited to attend in the Hall of the House on Monday, the eleventh day of January, 1869, at 3 o'clock, p. m., for the purpose for opening and publishing the returns of the election of Governor and Lieutenant Governor at the late election.
And then--
On motion the Senate adjourned.
