TENTH VOLUME.

INDIANA LEGISLATURE.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

SATURDAY, January 16, 1869.

The House met at ten o'clock a. m.

Messrs. Johnston of Parke, Chittenden, Admire, Underwood, Bowen, Skidmore, Jump Williams of Union, Hall and Sunman, were excused from attendance in the Hall till Monday and Tuesday.

Mr. Dittemore obtained leave of absence til Wednesday on account of sickness.

Mr. WILLIAMS of Union, moved that th House adjourn till Monday at two o'clock p.m. which was subsequently withdrawn.

Mr. RUDDELL said the newspaper re ports misrepresented his position on Mr. Field of Lake's, bill [H. R. 14] for an act giving ten per cent, interest on judgments. He meant to say that to vote to sustain the existing law, or for certain amendments offered to the bill would be to offer a premium on swindling.

Mr. WILDMAN made an ineffectual motion to dispense with the reading of the journal of yesterday.

On motion of Mr. COFFROTH the reading of the journal was postponed till monday.

FOURTEENTH JUDICIDL DISTRICT.

On motion by Mr. COFFROTH, the House took up the consideration of the Fourteenth Common Pleas District bill [S. 1]--the question being on the third reading thereof--

Mr. COFFROTH explained that the bill had passed the Senate, and as the Courts in that Disirict were to meet on Monday next, he was requested by a member of the Senate to ask the House to take up the bill, that the provisions of it might meet with immediate application.

Mr. RATLIFF from the Committee to whom the bill was referred, advocated its passage. It was, perhaps, the best thing that they could do.

It was finally passed the House--yeas 80, nays 0.

Mr. WILLIAMS of Union, now renewed his motion to adjourn, without effect.

Mr. VATER moved to suspend the regular order of business, for the consideration of resolutions and bills on the first reading.

The motion was rejected.

PETITIONS.

Mr. FIELD of Lake, presented a petition from sundry citizens, asking the State to refund money paid the State for land to which it had no title.

It was referred to the Committee on Claims without reading.

Mr. STEWART of Ohio, presented a petition from eighty colored persons, praying for a change in the school laws, so that colored children can have the benefit of the common schools.

It was referred to the Committee on Education without reading.

Mr. WILLIAMS of Knox, presented a petition of Hubbard and other citizens for the fruit growing interest.

It was referred, without reading, to the Committee on Agriculture.

On the motion of Mr. WILDMAN, (he remarking that unless such steps is taken, it will not be long until so many of the members re sick, that it will be impossible to find a quorum,) it was ordered that the Speaker appoint a committee to provide for a healthy ventilation of this hall; whereupon--

The SPEAKER appoidted Messrs. Wildman, Higgins and Barrett.

The House adjourned till Monday two 'clock p. m.
