On his further motion the Doorkeeper was sent for the absentees.

Further proceedings under the call were dispensed with.

THE STATE DEBT.

The PRESIDENT pro tem. announced the lonsideration of the special order, viz: the State Debt bills H. R. No. 285 and S. No. 279.

Mr. CHAPMAN, from a minority of the Special Committee on the subject of the State Debt, submitted a report dissenting from the majority report presented this morning; recommending passage of the bill H. R. 285 and that the bill S. No. 279 be laid on the table.

Mr. BRANDEY spoke in favor of the conclusions made in the majority report. He urged Senators to stand by the financial integrity of the State under any and all circumstances; and insisted that the bill S. No. 279 would preserve the credit of the State both at home and abroad.

Mr. CORBIN occupied the attention of the Senate, speaking for the bill section No. 279. He could come to no other conclusion than that there can be no more honorable manner of adjusting our debt than the plan proposed in this bill.

Mr. CULLEN contended that the bill originating in the Senate is the one that ought to pass. In his humble judgment the House bill would not adjust the debt at all; it was objectionable from beginning to end while the Senate bill would save to the State over a half a million of dollars.

Mr. VAWTER stood against the majority report, for he would support no proposition which does not provide for the accumulation of a fund to discharge the State debt.

Mr. OYLER obtained the floor, but gave way for -

Mr. HORD, on whose motion, the further consideration of the question was postponed till 10 o'clock to-morrow morning.

And then the Senate adjourned.
