Mr. WALLACE said that he had been handed a proposition from the Citizen office, but he saw nothing to be gained by their proposal. He was satisfied that each Senator is so desirous of having the Legislative Sentinel that they would pay for it out of their own pockets, should the Senate refuse to subscribe for it.
Mr. HEFFREN moved to lay the whole matter on the table, to enable a resolution to be introduced covering the whole matter, and settling the question at once.
The resolution was agreed to.
Mr. HAMILTON obtained leave to introduce the following resolution, which was adopted:
Resolved, That the Committee on Printing inquire into the expediency of reducing the price paid for the printing of the Journals of the Legislature, the Laws of the State, and such other printing as is necessary for the State of Indiana, for which the State pays, of every kind, and to report by bill or otherwise.
Mr. GREEN, from the Select Committee to which was referred his bill (S. 3) enlarging the Seventh Judicial Circuit, by adding to the same the counties of Hancock, Madison, Hamilton, Tipton and Howard, and fixing the time of holding Circuit Courts therein, reported the same back with sundry amendments.
The report was concurred in, and the bill read the second time by its title.
On motion of Mr. MURRAY, the bill was considered as engrossed, read through the third time and finally passed the Senateyeas 47, nays 2.
The PRESIDENT, pro tempore, laid before the Senate the annual report from the Trustees of the Wabash and Erie Canal.
Mr. HEFFREN moved that it be laid on the table, and 200 copies printed.
The motion was rejected, after two votes, by yeas and nays - the second resulting - yeas 19, nays 30.
The report was then read.
Mr. WALLACE moved its reference to the Committee on Canals and Internal Improvements, and that 500 copies be printed.
The motion was agreed to.
On motion by Mr. WALLACE, Senators Hamilton, Conner, Carnahan and McLain were added to the Committee on Canals and Internal Improvements.
On Mr. WEIR'S motion, Mr. Murray was also added to the same committee.
Mr. TURNER offered a resolution that the Senate subscribe for three copies each of the Daily Journal, Sentinel,Citizen, weekly American, Volksblatt and Frie Presse, two of the English and all the German papers to be enveloped and stamped.
Mr. JOHNSTON moved to strike out all papers except the Sentinel and Journal.
Mr. MARCH offered the following as an amendment.
Providing that each daily paper publish full reports of the proceedings of this body.
Mr. TURNER accepted the amendment, and moved the previous question.
There being a second, under its operation the amendment of the Senator from Putnam [Mr. Johnston] was rejected - yeas 23, nays 26and the original resolution, as amended by the Senator from Delaware [Mr. March] was adopted by yeas 27, nays 23.
Mr. GOODING offered the following:
ResolvedThat the Senate will, the House of Representatives concurring therein, proceed, in the Hall of the House ot Representatives, at 10 o'clock, A. M.,on to-morrow, to elect by joint viva voce vote, a State Agent, a Canal Trustee, a State Librarian, and Trustees for the Insane, Blind, and Deaf and Dumb Asylums, according to law.
Upon Mr. TARKINGTON'S motion the resolution was laid on the table by yeas 32, nays 17.
A message was received from the House of Representatives announcing the passage by that body of a joint resolution (H. R. 5) instructing our legally elected Senators and requesting our Representatives to vote for a law giving to each settler on the public lands 160 acres.
Also, a joint resolution (H. R. 6) authorizing a number of German books to be delivered to township libraries where the number of German voters justify it.
Mr. HEFFREN offered the following resolution, which was adopted by consent:
Resolved That the Committee on the Judiciary be instructed to inquire into and report to the Senate whether under the provisions of the Constitution a Senator elected to fill a vacancy occasioned by resignation, or otherwise, shall hold his office for the unexpired term, or for the full term of four years.
Mr. BEESON offered a preamble and resolution that on the 19th inst., the Senate repair to the Hall of the House of Representatives, to receive and hear petitions from women of the State, praying for legislation in their behalf. He sustained his resolution in a few remarks.
The resolution was adopted.
And then the Senate adjourned.
