description:

Douglass' description written on negative envelope reads, in full: "Historical | Harvesting Peat | Taken at Bacons Pond, Indianapolis, about 1900. This old man harvested enough peat every summer to last him through the winter"

This is probably what was known as Bacon's Swamp named after Hiram Bacon. The swamp is today (2015) the Broad Ripple portion of Indianapolis. Bacon himself was a conductor on the Underground Railroad.
