description:

Paper megaphone scanned from the file "Liquor - Advertisements at Purdue Game - Criticisms of, 1937-1938" (Collection C213, box 356).

Background: Calvert Whiskey paper megaphones were distributed at the November 20, 1937 IU vs. Purdue football game in Bloomington, Indiana. Some of those in attendance were not happy and sent letters to then IU President Herman B Wells. The letters and one example of the megaphone can be found in the file mentioned above (the file also contains letters from Herman B Wells to Seagrams Distillers and Calvert Distillers as well as replies from those companies).

According to one of the letters one airplane flying above the stadium carried a banner behind it which read "Think Before You Drink" which was followed by another airplane with another banner which read "Say Seagrams and Be Sure".
