This image scanned from a Class of 1906 reunion letter dated April 15, 1916. The letter reads, in part: "Looks good, doesn't it? Do you remember the day we donned them? As one coed walked proudly up the street under hers, an impish youngster called over his back fence: 'See that girl with a boy's hat on?' We were the first aggregation to wear distinctive garb..."

A copy of the letter can be found in the IU Archives reference file "Class of 1906". The original letter is filed with the photograph collection.

This same image appears on page 288 of the 1906 Arbutus yearbook. According to page 332 of the same yearbook, the sombrero was adopted by the seniors as the class hat on November 8, 1905.
