description:

This image scanned from the scrapbook of Palmer Leon Little. The photo was originally taped to a page with two uncited newspaper articles. The first article's title: "Got Everything In Sight: The Fairmount Academy Delegation Bring Home Many Honors". That article shows Little coming in first place in the Running Broad Jump. The second article simply titled "Field Day" lists Little coming in first place: in the Running Broad Jump with a jump of 19 feet 2 inches, in the Running hop, step and jump with a jump of 42 feet and 3 inches, and in the Running hop, hop and jump with (on first trial) a jump of 44 feet and 2 inches.

Then written in red ink below the articles and image, in full: "A druggist named Bill Smith in Fowlerton planted a tree at the sight of the take-off and planted another tree at the point of landing - called broad jump in 1901. It measured 23 feet & eleven inches. He vouches that Leonard Little (my dad) made this jump."
